The AI Standard Hubā€™s inaugural Global Summit will explore the critical role of standards in AI governance, examining recent developments, key challenges, and emerging needs to foster global inclusiveness and collaboration in AI standardisation.

Livestream

The link to the livestream for the event will be posted here once it is available.

About the Summit

Organised in partnership with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Partnership on AI, our two-day event will bring together diverse stakeholders from across the international AI ecosystem to examine the current state of AI standardisation and explore the evolving role of standards in relation to AI governance frameworks and emerging regulation globally.

Day 1 will consider the lay of the land in AI standardisation and explore the role of standards in enabling international regulatory interoperability, strategies for promoting stakeholder diversity and global inclusion in standards development, and pathways to a mature and effective AI assurance ecosystem.

Day 2 will have a thematic focus on key issues in the governance of foundation models and will examine opportunities for alignment and closer collaboration between the AI safety community and the AI standardisation community in addressing these issues.

The Global Summit will be held on 17 and 18 March 2025 in London, with sessions being livestreamed online. In-person attendance will be invitation-based, while the livestreamed will be accessible to everyone.

What themes will it cover?

The Global Summit will feature a dynamic programme of keynote speeches, expert panels, and lightning talks designed to foster deeper alignment, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration among key stakeholder groups and decision-makers in pursuit of robust, equitable, and coordinated approaches to AI governance and standardisation.

The programme will address both current developments and emerging questions in AI standardisation, providing a unique platform to address immediate priorities in making AI standards a robust governance tool for the here and now as well as to explore forward-looking strategies for supporting the governance of advanced AI systems of the future.

Topics will include:

  • The interplay between standards, regulation, and global governance frameworks for AI
  • Inclusion and equitable participation in AI standards development across stakeholder groups and geographic regions
  • Strategies for building a robust AI assurance ecosystem
  • Opportunities for cross-fertilisation between the AI safety and AI standards communities
  • Governance challenges in the context of foundation models and advanced AI systems and the role of standardisation in addressing them

Who will speak at the event?

The Global Summit will feature leading voices from standards development bodies, national governments, intergovernmental organisations, AI Safety Institutes, the wider AI safety research community, and civil society.

Summary

Foundation models are evolving at a rapid pace and raise complex questions of governance and good practice that are distinct from other areas of AI innovation. Answers to these questions are at a nascent stage and are being pursued by a diverse range of different types of organisations, including formal Standards Development Organisations, AI safety institutes, industry consortia, and other initiatives. This session will examine the role of these different actors across the ecosystem in developing agreed frameworks of good practice for foundation models, considering prospects for convergence and opportunities for closer collaboration between different types of organisations and communities.

Summary

The proliferation of foundation models is associated with rapidly growing demand for AI compute resources, with significant environmental impacts in terms of carbon emissions and water use. As a result, there is an essential need to measure, document, and manage the environmental footprint associated with the development and use of models. This session will explore key questions at the intersection of AI and sustainability: How should we assess the environmental impact of foundation models? Why are standardised methods and metrics needed and what are some of the key initiatives working on developing them? The discussion will also examine how insights from established scientific methodologies and standards can inform AI-related environmental reporting and what mitigation strategies are needed to curb negative impacts.

Summary

Foundation models that are ā€˜openā€™, such as models whose weights are publicly available, play an increasingly important role in the AI ecosystem. Open models raise complex questions of governance and good practice that are unique to their context, such as difficulties in achieving consensus on terminology around different forms of ā€˜opennessā€™, commonly used licencing terms, or frameworks for the ā€˜staged releaseā€™ of models. This session will examine these questions and discuss the role of standardisation in addressing them.
