Measuring and managing the environmental impact of foundation models
Summary
The proliferation of foundation models is associated with rapidly growing demand for AI compute resources, with significant environmental impacts in terms of carbon emissions and water use. As a result, there is an essential need to measure, document, and manage the environmental footprint associated with the development and use of models. This session will explore key questions at the intersection of AI and sustainability: How should we assess the environmental impact of foundation models? Why are standardised methods and metrics needed and what are some of the key initiatives working on developing them? The discussion will also examine how insights from established scientific methodologies and standards can inform AI-related environmental reporting and what mitigation strategies are needed to curb negative impacts.

Governance of open foundation models
Summary
Foundation models that are āopenā, such as models whose weights are publicly available, play an increasingly important role in the AI ecosystem. Open models raise complex questions of governance and good practice that are unique to their context, such as difficulties in achieving consensus on terminology around different forms of āopennessā, commonly used licencing terms, or frameworks for the āstaged releaseā of models. This session will examine these questions and discuss the role of standardisation in addressing them.
