Description

The UK government’s pro-innovation approach to AI regulation (AI white paper), published 29 March 2023, sets out five principles representing what “well governed AI should look like on a cross cutting basis”. These principles are safety, security, and robustness; adequate transparency and explainability; fairness; accountability and governance; and contestability and redress.

The AI white paper emphasises the use of consensus-based standards – developed by Standards Development Organisations (SDOs) such as ISO/IEC, IEEE, and BSI – to support the operationalisation of these principles. SDO standards offer guidance for the development and deployment of AI systems, making them a useful tool for regulators as well as businesses in achieving the objectives defined by the UK’s AI white paper principles.

However, it can be difficult to determine the potential relevance of individual standards for this task. This poses a challenge for businesses wanting to adopt standards to support their AI governance and innovation activities.

In this interactive webinar, researchers from The Alan Turing Institute’s AI Governance and Regulatory Innovation team share insights from their research mapping and assessing the relevance of standards for operationalising the AI white paper principles. This research aims to support UK stakeholders to use standards to interpret the UK’s AI regulation white paper principles and apply them in practice.

Register for this interactive webinar to understand the relationship between the AI standards landscape and the AI white paper principles, and to take an in-depth look at how standards could be used to satisfy these principles.
