International multistakeholder cooperation for AI standards (IGF 2023)

Description

The 18th annual meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) took place in Kyoto, Japan from 8 to 12 October 2023, and the AI Standards Hub contributed to the programme with a session on international multistakeholder cooperation for AI standards. 

Members of the AI Standards Hub team Florian Ostmann (The Alan Turing Institute), Matilda Rhode (BSI), and Sundeep Bhandari (NPL) began by presenting the Hub as a case study to consider strategies for multistakeholder participation and international cooperation around the development of standards for AI technologies. 

This was followed by a panel discussion featuring expert speakers from around the world including Ashley Casovan, Executive Director of the Responsible AI Institute, Canada; Aurélie Jacquet, Principal Research Consultant on Responsible AI for CSIRO-Data61, Australia’s National Science Agency; Nikita Bhangu, Head of Digital Standards policy in the UK government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT); and Wan Sie Lee, Director of Data-Driven Tech at Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). 

The session covered the role that standards will play in achieving an effective international system for the governance of AI technologies, how standards can foster their sustainable development and use, why multistakeholder participation and international cooperation are essential to develop successful AI standards, and what strategies can help pursue this objective.
