Role of standardisation in support of emerging technologies

Abstract

This study explores the role of standardisation in supporting the development and commercialisation of emerging technologies in the UK.

The study includes:

• a literature review on the role of standardisation and standards in supporting the development and commercialisation of emerging technologies
• a landscape review of the UK approach to standards development in support of emerging technology
• a review of experiences of standards and standardisation amongst innovators in 4 emerging technology areas (graphene, quantum computing, synthetic biology and hydrogen as a fuel)
  recommendations to help improve how standardisation in emerging technologies operate in the UK
