The requirement for standards in the VR and AR sectors

Abstract

What is this report about?

The Virtual and Augmented Reality industries represent a very substantial and fast-growing opportunity. According to Goldman Sachs, AR and VR are expected to grow into a $95 billion market by 2025.

Against this backdrop, thereā€™s currently very limited standardization activity in this area by BSI or anyone else. This led BSI to commission research to examine the market for VR/AR standards at the end of 2017.

The research consisted of desk research and in-depth, mainly, face-to-face interviews with 30 key players in the Virtual and Augmented Reality sectors. This included the design and medical sectors, content capture and production houses, standards bodies, broadcasters and video content distributors including the adult sector, VR platforms, gaming publishers and the major studios.

The report details how the VR and AR sectors have evolved to date and recommends their likely standardization needs going forward.
